However, I will wait to change my clocks until I arrive there. The current weather routing has me weaving through the atolls S of Fiji. About 35 nm from Vava’u, I must miss the island of Late. After that, there are no obstructions for about 200 nm, until I reach Fiji’s atolls. I got up at 6:00, got the boat ready, and weighed anchor at 8:20. I was in open water by 10:00. I made water while motoring out of the passage. Once clear of the islands, I rounded up, shut the engine down, lowered the watervane, raised the main with one reef, and unfurled the jib. Once the sails were trimmed and the windvane balanced, I was making 6.5 kt towards the waypoint (257) in a close haul. The windvane balanced was blowing 15 kt nearly due S. The boat seemed balanced and under control while heeling 15 degrees. The skies are mostly clear and swell is perhaps 6’. Although the swell is relatively little, reaching is enough to drive the water over the bow. The winds proved to be variable 12-18 kt, driving the boat 5.5-6.5 kt. I’ll be happy averaging 6. It is 10:40 and I have 1002 nm to the waypoint (as the crow flies). I am now traveling faster under sail than I was motoring, so the land is quickly disappearing from the stern. After eight days at anchor, it did not take long for me to feel comfortable once more at sea. Under control of the windvane, I could finally enjoy the tea I made at 7:30. It is 11:00 and I am about 27 nm from the N side of Late. I should reach it in 4-5h, well before dark. Once 10 nm offshore, I turned off Starlink, switched to the Iridium Go, and downloaded a weather route. The present conditions predicted are close to what I am observing, 11 with gusts of 15 kt. The prediction is for the wind to increase overnight to 21 with gusts of 28. Before dark, I will put the second reef in and reduce the headsail by 50%. The wind is also supposed to shift from 180 to 130 overnight, which means it with go from a close to a broad reach. I will need to get up several times to trim the sails and adjust the windvane. No weather warnings were included in the report. It looks like smooth sailing at least to Fuji. I took a nap in the cockpit. I woke up about 13:00. I was almost equidistant between Vava’u and Late and could see both. Late was much taller than I expected. The wind had shifted from 175 to 190, placing the boat in less of a close haul and more in a reach. I was going to pass Late to the N by about 7 nm. Once past Late, there will be no land obstacles until Friday. I noticed that heeled over more in the reach, relative to the runs I have been doing, the paddle wheel speed detector underestimates the speed. The boat speed reads 5.7, but the SOG is 6.2 according to the instruments and 6.5 according to the Navionics app. I do not believe this difference is due to a current. It is 12:40 and in the last 2h I have gone 13.3 nm, a 6.6 kt average, close to what Navionics says my SOG is. By 13:30, Tonga has disappeared over the horizon. By 13:30, the wind had shifted to 160, and few hours earlier than forecasted by PW. By 14:00, the wind was blowing consistently over 20 kt. I rounded up and furled in half the Yankee. After sailing a few minutes more, the boat still felt overpowered and the cockpit was wet. I rounded up a second time and put a second reef in the main. The speed was reduced to 5.5 kt, but it was much more comfortable. Now heeled over 6 instead of 16, I prepared a meal. I passed N of Late about 15:30. The gusts were not as strong, which may have been because I was in the shadow of the island. The windvane was behaving better under reduced sail. Safely past Late and having eaten, I went below deck to sleep in anticipation of changing wind conditions requiring my attention during the night. I dozed, but woke up at 16:00. A squall had passed in front of me and was just off the starboard bow.

Current Position: 18 41.227’S 174 39.487’W; Local Timezone: UTC+23; SOG: 5.8 kt COG: 238; TWS: 19 kt; TWD: 145; Distance to Waypoint (Vanuatu, Efata, Port Vila): 973; Total Miles Sailed: 5811 nm; Comments: Vanuatu is in the UTC+21 time zone, so I will loose two hours during the passage.
