A Quick Look around this morning and I found another screw missing, this time from the gooseneck bracket itself. This is very serious. This morning, I am going to the Tropicana Cafe, where they are supposed to fill LP bottles on Tuesdays at 9:00. I have partially used two of the three bottles. The first one developed a leak that I need to fix and the other I have used more.The weight of the the first bottle is 19.6 lb and the weight of the second 14.0. The tare weight is 9.9 and the full weight is 23.6 lbs, so I have used 23.6-19.6=4 lbs of fuel in the first and 23.6-14.9=9.6 lbs of the second for a total of 9.6+4=13.6 lb. The capacity is 23.6-9.9=13.7 lbs, so I have only used one-third of my LP fuel in three months. Although there is quite a bit of fuel remaining in the tanks, this is one of the few places that use LP and has the adapters in the South Pacific, so I am going to get them filled. I arrived at Cafe Tropicana right at 9:00. There was already a bunch of bottles waiting to be filled. I was told they’d be ready by noon. I took the opportunity to have breakfast. I asked about a 10mm tap (to repair the boom) and was sent on a 20m walk to a hardware store who had a tap and die set for $150. I decided to hold out to see if I could find an alternative solution. The store did have a good handle for the gaff so was planning to make, so I got it, even though it was $25. I walked to the marine chandlery and I was shocked to see 316 SS threaded rod immediately as you walk through the door. That was exactly what I need to fix the boom. I also bought the nuts and washers. As I was preparing to pay, I asked if they happen to sell gaffs. The lady apologized and said no, just the heads, and then she produced a sharpened and bent piece of stainless rod that was exactly what I had been planning to fabricate from some rod I had onboard. Score! I took my haul to the boat and returned at noon to the Cafe Tropicana to fetch my LP tanks, where I was told they couldn’t fill them. Some research on the internet taught me that Mexico gets almost all of its LP gas from the US, and the US refines its LP gas so that it is almost pure propane. The LP gas in Tonga is a mixture of propane and butane. Because the former is more volatile that the latter, Tongan LP gas cannot be condensed into a tank that has US LP gas in it. Rather than empty one of the tanks, I decided to continue using it expecting it to last until Thursday Island. On a sour note, I have come to realize that that the plate at the end of the boom to which the gooseneck is attached is bolted from the inside, which means the boom will have to be taken apart to do a repair. This is going to be a big job. I am working on a hydraulic system to support the boom so I don’t need to remove the mainsail. I will have to undertake this project early in the morning, because high winds typically develop in the afternoon. This may be for the best, because I can inspect inside the boom to see if there has been any damage after sailing with only two of the six screws (one lose and one missing on the front and one missing and one loose of the four on the side) firmly attached to the gooseneck plate.

Current Position: 18 39.529’S 173 59.003’W; Local Timezone: UTC+23; SOG: 0 kt COG: N/A; TWS: 11 kt; TWD: 160; Distance to Waypoint (Vava’u): At Anchor; Total Miles Sailed: 5750 nm; Comments: In addition to surveying the entire boat (every nut and bolt), my priorities for repairs are 1) reinforce the stern pulpit, 2) make a …

Continue reading “Check-in June 10, 2025; 01:24 UTC”

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[19

post-1905","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-captainslog
["GET
